Every Two Minutes: Why Maternal Health Equity Cannot Wait

Every Two Minutes: Why Maternal Health Equity Cannot Wait

“Every 2 minutes, 1 woman dies during pregnancy or birth.”

Pause and reflect on that statistic.

Behind every number is a mother, a child, a family, a community, and a future forever changed.

What makes this reality even more heartbreaking is that many of these deaths are preventable. The World Health Organization continues to emphasize that access to timely, respectful, high-quality maternal healthcare can dramatically reduce maternal mortality and improve outcomes for women and families worldwide.

Maternal health is not simply a healthcare issue. It is a human rights issue, an economic issue, a social justice issue, and a public health priority.

Across the globe, women continue to face barriers that include:

  • Delayed access to care
  • Geographic and financial challenges
  • Systemic inequities and discrimination
  • Mental health concerns that go unaddressed
  • Gaps in culturally responsive and person-centered support.

As maternal mental health advocates, healthcare professionals, policy makers, researchers, and community leaders, we must move beyond awareness and toward action.

At W.O.M.B Holistic Maternal & Family Wellness, this commitment is reflected through our W.O.M.B Equity Pilot Program, which seeks to support Black, underserved, and marginalized women across the maternal health continuum from fertility and pregnancy, birth, childbirth education to postpartum recovery, maternal mental health, and menopause, starting with London, Ontario, Canada.

Our vision is simple:

  • No woman should feel unseen.
  • No woman should feel unheard.
  • No woman should feel unsupported.

Maternal mortality is not merely a statistic. It is a measure of how much a society values women, families, and future generations.

If we are serious about improving maternal outcomes, we must invest in prevention, education, advocacy, community-based support, culturally responsive care, and equitable healthcare systems.

Because every mother matters.
And every two minutes is two minutes too long.
